Songkran 2009

Phra Aod Titayaro (Right) & Phra Si Varapo (Left)
Originally uploaded by Evans-Amsri

This weekend two monks from Wat Santiwongsaram in Birmingham came to the Isle of Man for the Songkram celebration.

Whilst Noi, Jeep and others were preparing for the festivities, I took the monks on a tour of the Island. The highlight I think was the Laxey Wheel (Lady Isabella). We all climbed to the top. Neither PJ or William were worried about the height. It was quite dizzy looking down from the top. We even put on hard hats and went a short way down a mine, including the monks.

After refreshments at our home we arrived back at Noi's house later than expected. The monks immediately retired for their evening meditation.

PJ & William in the Snow

PJ & William in the Snow
Originally uploaded by Evans-Amsri

After all the recent snow in the UK we couldn't wait any longer for snow in Ramsey. As of today - 7th February 2009 - we still haven't had any snow in Ramsey! So today I took the boys up to the mountain. There was sufficient snow at this height for the boys to play in the snow. We didn't stay long as the temperature was below zero.

Thailand Holiday - Postscript

It's been a week now. As usual nothing seems to have changed at home or work. It's as if we never went away. We are all missing Thailand. The holiday went so quickly.

I wrote a letter of thanks to the British Ambassador in Bangkok - His Excellency Quinton Quayle - Now there's a Manx name! I commended his staff for all the help that they gave me in my hour of need.

Now it's work and save for our next trip to Thailand. Possibly in 2010.

Thailand Holiday - Day 21

Sad day today. Everyone was locked in their own thoughts. We visited Wat Luang Pa Nak to say goodbye to the senior monk. Back home, we finished packing and then we set off for Udon airport.

Many tears were shed at the airport. No-one wanted us to leave and no-one wanted to leave, but leave we did. PJ and William were inconsolable. Mai was equally upset at seeing her two grandsons leave.

On arrival at Bangkok, a taxi ride from Don Muang (Domestic) to the new Suvarnabhumi (International) airport saw us checked in and silently waiting for departure to the UK.

Surprise! Uan and Pui turned found us in the airport and kept us company until our departure. The Thai Airways 00:30 flight - TG910 - was on time. After a dramatic 48 hours we were finally on our way home. We all slept quite peacefully throughout most of the flight and arrived at London Heathrow at about 06:15 the same day. Time differences does strange things. We collected our hire car and drove to Gatwick airport, stopping off at a Little Chef near Horsham. The burgers were great!

The Flybe 12:35 flight from Gatwick to the Isle of Man went without a hitch. Another surprise! Dang, Noi, Leonne & Joanna met us at Ronaldsway airport with our car. We loaded up the car and drove the final leg home, exhausted! My ears are shot to pieces after 5 flights in 2 days.

After the rest of the weekend to recover, it is back to work on Monday for me, work on Tuesday for Jeep and back to school for PJ on Monday.

Thailand Holiday - Day 20

I cought the red-eye flight from Udon to Bangkok Don Muang airport this morning. On arrival I grabbed a taxi and went straight to the embassy. The two Thai ladies at the embassy - Khun Pareena and Khun Siwaporn - were extremely helpful and curteous and helped to ease my anxiety. It was decided that I will have to apply for an Emergency Passport - cost about £55. I would have to return in the afternoon to collect it. In the meantime, I kicked my heels around Surkumvit (which is close to the embassy) and wondered past the many bars and massage parlours (quite quiet at this time of day) I visited a couple of the glitzy shopping malls in the area and had some lunch. At 3pm I returned to the embassy to hopefully collect my EP. I had to wait in the queue. I should have returned earlier.

It wasn't until 4pm that I got my EP. Now I only needed to replace my entry visa and get that stamped on my EP. No entry visa - no exit visa! I quickly started to walk towards the Thai Immigration office. Big Mistake! It is further than it looked on the map. Time was ticking by. I grabbed a taxi bike and hurried on. The Thai Immigration office is due to close at 4.30pm!

The 'Lost Passport' desk just closed as I arrived and the two young ladies were preparing to go home. After much pleading and wai'ing, the girls had a change of heart and re-opened their desk and processed my visa. With my EP duly stamped I left Thai Immigration. I phoned Jeep the good news and started my journey back to Udon. Another taxi ride back to Don Muang airport through the evening traffic. That journey took about 90 minutes! I managed to get on the next flight out of Don Muang to Udon, departing at 18:35.

Jeep collected me from Udon airport and after some late night shopping we drove home.

Phew! What a day!

Thailand Holiday - Day 19

Still no reply from the embassy. I called them. The Thai staff were not very helpful. I guess they were very busy and phones were an interruption. Eventually, I was put through to a British member of staff - Mr Callum Stevenson. From here on, things got less stressful. Mr Stevenson was very helpful. He quickly confirmed that my passport could not be used. Which, basically meant I was stranded in Thailand until I got a replacement. I was due to return to the UK in 2 days!

I booked a flight for the next day with Nok Air, departing Udon at 07:30, arriving in BKK an hour later. We'll see how I get on tomorrow.

I phoned JimboPSM and Doug today. We'll meetup some other time.

C'est la Vie!

Thailand Holiday - Day 18

Ooh! I have a bit of a hangover!

I replaced the tax and insurance discs in the car this morning.

Mai wash my trousers early this morning. Unfortunately, my passport and international driving license were still in my pocket. The driving license was completely destroyed, The passport was destroyed also, all except the plastic coated biometric page. I spent the rest of the day in contact with the British embassy in Bangkok via email and phone. I got the remains of my passport scanned and emailed to the embassy. No reply today.

Thailand Holiday - Day 17

Jeep and I drove into Udon today without the boys to do some shopping. Another snake 2-3ft long crossed our path. Police were out in force this morning with traffic checks. A falang behind me got pulled over. We were lucky. I discovered later that we did not have the car documents in the car (legal requirement) also we were still displaying last years tax and insurance discs (we had them, just weren't displaying them) Oops!

We bought a rice steamer and a water boiler to take home to the IOM with us. We did a little Christmas shopping. Jeep traded in some of here broken gold jewellery and bought some more. Later, we collected Plai from the bus station and returned home before it got dark.

That night I drank a lot of beer with Toey's wife and got drunk.

Thailand Holiday - Day 16

Suan Hin Pha Ngam
Originally uploaded by Evans-Amsri

After breakfast we all drove to Suan Hin Pha Ngam (The beautiful cliff stone garden) also called Thailand's Kunming, after China's stone garden in Kunming, Yunnan province. The limestone outgrops are between 230 and 280 million years old.Uplift and erosion created the spectacular cliffs and hidden gardens. We climbed to the top of one of these outcrops for a fantastic vista. Poor Mai, it was a tough climb.

After returning to the car - a 16 seater Toyota mini bus - Gulab let me drive. It was a pleasure. What a smooth ride. The Toyota just glides along.

On the way back to Gulab's house, we stopped by a roadside resturant next to a fish pond and ate lunch. Once we arrived at Gulab's house it was a tearful goodbye and swap cars to drive back to Ban Phue.

We had a wonderful time and after we arrived home, it was a quiet bathe and then to bed - exhausted!

Gulab's Guest House
Originally uploaded by Evans-Amsri

Saturday saw us travel to Loi province again and visit Gulab and her family. We arrived late in the evening after a delay at home looking for a car for Jeep's sister Pui. This time we took Jeep's dad with us. He was perking up quite a bit. We all sat down to a tasty evening meal under the guest house. Jeep and I had a sleepless night tending to Pa's frequent need for assistance. Not that we minded, Pa was enjoying his visit.

Si Sa-At Road, Ban Phue
Originally uploaded by Evans-Amsri

A quiet day today. I rode around town on Jeep's motorbike with PJ and William and took many photos of the town. I wanted to make a street map of the Ban Phue but Google Maps does a good job - only the minor roads missing and some of the temples. Jeep visited a nearby dentist and we were so impressed I had a clean and polish myself. Very good, very quick and very good price. We tried a Skype video call to Mum in Spain, video not too good, internet quite slow.

Thailand Holiday - Day 13

Wat Luang Pu Nak
Originally uploaded by Evans-Amsri

In the morning Jeep, Sunisa, Myself, PJ and William visited a nearby temple - Wat Luang Pu Nak. We took food to offer to the monks and share with the other visitors to the temple. I took many photos of the sculptures depicting hell. We bought a Buddha image and some amulets from the temple shop to take home with us. Afterwards we bought some fish food to feed the temple fish.

Later, Jeep and I slipped out without the boys to do some shopping in Udon. We bought several items that we wanted to take back to the Isle of Man. We met Plai later after he finished school. In the evening we stopped by at our favourite kerbside noodle bar in Udon Datsadi Road. Afterwards to did some more shopping in Tesco Lotus before returning home. By the time we got home William was fast asleep.

Loi Krathong
Originally uploaded by Evans-Amsri

Fulll Moon - Loi Krathong festival. Aom and Garn stopped by for a visit in the morning. Aom has changed so much I did not recognise her. Lunchtime we watched the Loi Krathong carnival procession through the town. The costums, floats and dancing was a delight! Afterwards, we lunched and chatted with Aom and Garn. Later they left to return to Udon. After dark, we went into town, bought our Krathongs (floats) and set them afloat in the local pond. Later, Jeep and I went to the nearby school grounds where the main festivities were taking place. We watched a little of the beauty pagent. There were also dance competitions from various schools in the area.

Sunrise over the fishponds
Originally uploaded by Evans-Amsri

We woke early and I took some photos of the sunrise over the fishponds. We breakfasted at Gulab's house, just a short drive from the guest house. We chatted awhile with Gulab's sisters, Udorn and Lamduan, and Udorn's husband Moor. Late morning we drove home for lunch as we promised PJ we would be home then. During our drive home we spotted a snake crossing the road ahead of us. We slowed to watch it's rapid progress - this is considered lucky to witness - it is quite rare to see a snake. Amazing how quickly a snake can cross a road! PJ had a great time at home - spoilt rotten! In the afternoon Jeep and PJ had their hair cut. Both look great. Jeep's cough is getting better. Weather is noticeably cooler now in the morning and evening. When the sun gets up it is lovely and warm again.

Gulab's Guest House
Originally uploaded by Evans-Amsri

Jeep, Sa, Gulab, William and Myself drove to Gulab's home - Ban San Te Suk, ampur Pha Khaow, Loei province. We drove past Erawan Cave. We must visit it one day. We stayed overnight in Gulab's guest house, surrounded on three sides by fish ponds. Still no trouble with those dreaded mossies! Gulab and Sa slept in the tent on the balcony. The tent makes a great natural mossie net! I took some great photos of the sunrise next day - we got up early!

Thailand Holiday - day 9

A quiet day today. Jeep still has her bad cough. We all got up early to visit the forest temple - Wat Na Kha. It was good to see the senior monk at the temple again.

Later in the morning, we were visited by Jeep's aunt, uncle and cousins.

In the afternoon, our good friend Gulab from Loei province visited us with her sisters and brother-in-law. Gulab's family returned home and Gulab stayed with us overnight. Tomorrow, we will all go to the local temple to make merit.

In the evening, Uan, Buth, Pui, myself and the boys visited Wat Luang Pu Nak to tell our fortunes using chinese fortune sticks. I drew number 28 and PJ number 16. Both were supposed to be good. I couldn't read Thai or Chinese so I had to rely of others to translate. We bought some fish food and fed the catfish in the temple pond.

Later in the morning we drove to Uma's parents home in Thung Fon - to the east of Udon Thani - not far from Ban Chiang world heritage site. We delivered some family photos to Uma's parents and stayed for lunch.

After lunch we visited one of Jeep's cousin's who lived nearby (about 5 miles back the way we came).

On the way home we stopped off at the Big C shopping mall in Udon, arriving home late.

Thailand Holiday - day 7

This morning, Jeep gave me some brief instructions on how to ride the motorbikes. I prefer the pink one - twist and go - can't be simpler. The black one has a tempermental choke! I was riding about town in no time. I rode to the computer shop (where else?) and bought a sound card and speakers for Plai's computer - the onboard sound card is rubbish! Back home, I fitted the card and fired up Skype. In the evening, I called Mum in Spain. Late evening our end, mid-afternoon Spanish time. Video was great, sound not so good. We could hear Mum (most of the time) but Mum kept losing us!

Plai is well pleased with the addition of the sound card. It makes all the difference to his game playing and listening to music on YouTube.

Thailand Holiday - day 6

Neighbours at Gold Shop
Originally uploaded by Evans-Amsri

This morning we visited our neighbours at the gold shop. I presented the patron with a bottle of Glenmorangie. I have yet to find any malt Whisky in Thailand. Plenty of blended stuff, but no malt. I'm sure it can be had (for a price) in Bangkok, but elsewhere I'm not so sure the demand is there.

We sat and chatted with our neighbours for an hour or so. PJ and William went off to school with their cousin Palmy. This is a private school in Ban Phue. It was very quite at home without the children. I went shopping alone at the department store in Ban Phue. I bought some shorts and shirts. I was horrified at my waist size. I must do something about this when I get back to the Isle of Man.

The children arrived home at lunchtime. PJ wasn't happy with the Thai food at school.

During the early afternoon we stood by the cross-road in the town centre to watch the Chinese festival and parade. There was a dragon dance along the main road with lots of fire crackers, some acrobatics and then a very lengthy parade. Different communities in Ban Phue put on float displays, dance troops, beauty queens and generally made as much noise as possible. This really marked the start of Loi Krathong festival. Many of the procession displayed their Krathongs - a float made from banana leaves and decorated with flowers and candles. Some were very large and ornate. These would be floated during the night of the full-moon (this year the 12th) after dark on the local waters.

In the evening after dark we went into town again to visit the fair. Plenty of food stalls - delicious! There was a Chinese theatre, a Chinese shrine, some fairground rides, an outdoor stageshow and and outdoor cinema. This fair runs until Loi Krathong itself. We will come back again. PJ, Palmy and William manage to persuade Na Sa and Na Buth to take them to the fair every evening!

PJ is taking to learning Thai under Na Sa's tutorledge. It seems to me with PJ's tantrums, all he needs is more attention. William happily plays alone or with others, he doesn't need the constant attention as PJ does. Gold star today for William.

Feeding fish in Nong Prajak Park
Originally uploaded by Evans-Amsri

I sat around home and chatted the morning away. In the afternoon we drove to Udon and fed the fish at Nong Prajak Park. Later we went to the Chaoensri Complex shopping mall. I bought various bits for Plai's PC. When we got home I setup the webcam and downloaded Skype. I checked Skype but Mum was not online. PJ and William enjoy being taken around town on one of the motorbikes with Na Sa (Auntie Sunisa). The bikes hardly qualify as 'motorbikes', 50-100cc and fully automatic. No pedals, push button to start engine, twist throttle and go! The brakes are the same as for a bicycle. If fact it is just like riding a bicycle but no peddling!

Thailand Holiday - day 4

Past Kings of Thailand
Originally uploaded by Evans-Amsri

Today we visited the Thai equivalent of Madame Tussaud's. It contains famous and historical figures of Thailand. The name in English of the waxworks is "Thai Human Imagery Museum".

We stopped at another floating resturant for lunch. Afterwards, we had a mad dash across Bangkok to Pui's apartment to pick up our bags (we should have taken them with us!) Then we had another dash back across Bangkok to Don Muang airport to catch our flight up to Udon Thani. This was a first for Jeep's mum. She enjoyed the flight. She didn't enjoy the run through departures to board the flight with minutes to spare! 13,300 Baht for 4 adults and 3 children, very reasonable. This was with Nok Air. Later we were to find that Thai Airways had a special offer, which put their fares very close to Nok Air. Thai Airways operates A320 airbuses, while Nok Air operates Boeing 737s. Along with the better service from Thai Airways it would have been the better deal. Next time...

We arrived at Udon at 17:30 to be met by Plai with an aircon vannette for the 40 minute run to Ban Phue - quicker than Pui and Uan's drive back across Bangkok. We got home first!

Pa was pleased to see us, more tears and hugs.

Thailand Holiday - day 3

Monday we drove into Bangkok - usual heavy traffic. We arrived at the Siam Paragon shopping mall for lunch. My Abbey debit card would not work in the ATMs! I tried a bank - no joy. Jeep's Barclays debit card would not work in the ATMs either! In the bank Jeep's card was accepted but mine wasn't. I will transfer my money via the internet to my pre-payment Master Card.

We had a fun time in Ocean World aquarium which is in the basement of the Siam Paragon. As anticipated, Thais 500 Baht but foreigners 900 Baht! We managed to get in with a 1,500 Baht (Thai price) family ticket for four, 3,000 Baht for the same ticket for foreigners. Incidentally, foreigner prices displayed using western numerals, Thai prices displayed in Thai numerals, so most foreigners never know - cheeky!

The aquarium was probably worth the foreigners price as it can easily take over an hour to get through. We had a great time! Included in the family ticket price was a trip around the main tank in a glass bottomed boat with commentary. Later PJ became a stooge for a comic magician performing in front of one of the tanks. Everyone including PJ had a scream! We were crying with laughter. PJ makes a great stooge!

Later we crossed Bangkok, again in heavy traffic, for a delicious evening meal with one of Jeep's neighbours who had moved to Bangkok from Ban Phue. They remember PJ when he was a baby.

Later that evening we had a traffic free run across Bangkok back to Uan and Pui's apartment.

Thailand Holiday - day 1 & 2

Jeep caught a cold two days before we left the Isle of Man. We flew from London Heathrow on Thai Airways TG917 at 21:35 on Saturday 1st November - slight delay due to late arrival of flight crew.

PJ and william were both sick before we boarded - to much rich food? They continued to be sick sparodically throughout the flight! Little sleep for us all. We arrived tired but relieved at 16:30 local time on Sunday. Immigration were friendly and helpful and we passed through baggage reclaim and customs quickly.

Yai, Sunisa, Pui, Uan and Palmy met us at the airport. Everyone was choked with a few tears, including me! We all piled into Uan's car and drove across Bangkok to Uan and Pui's apartment. We drove west into the setting sun and across a river.

Though we were tired we dined out at a local floating resturant at Sam Phuan. A very enjoyable meal. We slept with difficulty that night even though we were very tired - Jet lag?

VB.NET - passed!

My final result came through last week. I scored 89% for my assignment, and as this carried 70% of the overall mark, my final result was 88%. I am very pleased with that.

Monday, May 05, 2008

VB.NET

I received my marks for my first assessment last week. I was awarded 84%. Quite good I thought. I believed I would get better than 80% and I was right. Reading my examiners comments, I could have done much better. I lost my points by either not saying enough or not using enough comments in my code. This takes me back to my school days - "could do better".

I have completed the second part of the course and I am on schedule for handing in my programming assignment that makes up my final assessment and 70% of my overall marks. This is due in next Monday 12th of May. Again, I am aiming for greater than 80% mark.

VB.NET

My mid-term assesment has been completed and represents 30% of my final marks. I have to complete my last unit and the final assessment. This assessment is a small project and tests most of what was covered in the whole course. This will give me my remaining 70% of my marks. I am quietly confident of passing at a reasonable level. I'm also equally confident that I won't get 100%. I'm not that good!

A final note for this entry... I have another cold along with the usual chest infection. I thought I was done with these for this winter. I really am looking forward to some warmer weather. Even now it is still cold with some wintery blasts from the north. Not a good April, maybe this year promises a great summer.

Life of a Thai Teenager

If you love Thailand then you really must visit Panrit (Gor) Daoruang's website - http://www.gorsworld.com/ . He is serving a 3 year sentence for drug possession. Please purchase his autobiography, by doing so you will be supporting his lovely daughter - Nong Grace. His websites are also a great resource for learning Thai.

VB.NET

Well, I'm about half-way through the course. I now have my first assessment to complete. That's due no later than the 14th April. So far so good. It is a very smooth language to learn.

I have just started learning VB. I am studying with Exeter University on one of their undergraduate distance learning modules - Programming with Visual Basic .NET. The course started yesterday so I have nothing to report just yet.

I have just noticed how out of date I have let my website get. I must update it!

Preparations for New Year's Eve Party

Jeep is busy in the kitchen preparing food for 30 people for tomorrows party. As Jeep will not be able to have her 40th birthday party on her birthday, she has decided to combine a birthday party with New Year's Eve party. We are expecting about 25 adults but Jeep is catering for 30. Jeeps friend Loot has come round this evening to help. There is a lot of preparation needed. More helpers will arrive tomorrow. Some of my friends are coming round tomorrow too. It'll be nice to end the year with a bang!

My Cold Is Hanging On

I still have my cold. I have a chest infection to boot, which is playing havoc with my asthma! I'm on my second lot of antibiotics. The first lot seemed to have had little effect. Hopefully, this second lot will shift the infection. Maybe by the New Year? I hope so.

Jeep's ESOL Studies

Jeep continues to make every effort to improve her English. This year she enrolled at the IOM College for an ESOL course. She has successfully completed stage 2 and will start the new term in 2008 at stage 3.

Christmas Holidays

To use up my outstanding holiday entitlement for this year, I am on holiday until the 2nd of January. Jeep and I managed to slip away to the shops today without the boys. Wow! Christmas shopping on a weekday is a total revelation! The streets and shops were quieter than a normal Saturday! Christmas shopping has never been so much fun! We'll do that again. Only next year we'll make it a whole day and take in a quiet lunch too.

What? Another Cold!

William and I have caught another cold. This winter is no fun! One week in and so far I have managed to contain the cold. Apart from finding it hard to breath, no chest infect - so far! Hopefully, it will be all over by the weekend. Perhaps this Christmas and New Year will be germ free. Weather wise, this winter is developing a colder chill than previous years.

Jeep's Catering

Jeep was again asked to cater for a private party. This time for 21 ladies of the Northern Ladies Group on the Isle of Man. This went well and Jeep was praised again for all the delicious food that she had prepared.

Caught A Cold

PJ, William and I all caught colds. William and I had a chest infection. William's cleared up mine did not. Doc has now put me on antibiotics to clear my chest up. So far Jeep has escaped this cold. The cold, wet and windy weather continues. I'm already looking forward to next Spring!

SPILA Reunion

It was great meeting up with Cameron, Paul, Richard, Len, Lee, Keith, Matt and Steve, my 'old' colleagues from the SPILA IT Department, at the 'Traf' in Ramsey last night. It's not often they venture this far north! No sooner had I walked in the door when we we all upped and left for the Ellan Vannin pub just a few doors down. We had a few beers and lots of laughs. It was an early night as the 'gang' had to catch the last bus back to Douglas.

The Wind Has Changed

Nothing happens for awhile then all at once the buses arrive all together!

After a rushed trip into Douglas last Sunday for Jeep to attend an open recruitment day at Tesco, we only heard about this the night before, Jeep was asked back for a second interview on Thursday. Then on Thursday, she was offered a job working in the Bakery department. Yesterday Jeep attended her induction and starts work next Tuesday. Initially, she will be working on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday evenings and during Sunday daytime. We are very pleased and Jeep is looking forward to the journey ahead.

Last Friday, Jeep attended the Isle of Man College to sit her driver theory test. Though Jeep was nervous, unsurprisingly for me she not only finished first, she only got one question wrong! Jeep put in a lot of hours studying at home, both on the computer and from a book. Jeep tackled this project like she does everything else - thoroughly! Bear in mind too, English is not Jeep's native tongue. Well done Jeep!

Oh! And to round off the week we had a small win on the lotto! As I said, "It's been a funny old week".

Abbey Bank

Aaaaggh!! Abbey does it again!

I am tired of Abbey procedures and call centres half-way around the world. Last month I had a new pin issued due to my identity theft I spoke of earlier. I only used my new pin once before I forgot it.

At the end of August I requested a new pin. "3 to 5 working days" they said. On the sixth day I requested a new pin. Again "3 to 5 working days". The following week my pin number arrived, only this wasn't my pin number that was issued the previous week but the number issued two weeks previous. The following week my second pin number arrived. This was on the 25th. Over 3 weeks without having access to my account! There is no Abbey branch on the island. The ATM network is my only access.

I used my card with the new pin on the 25th at a non Abbey ATM. Normally this would have "activated" the card with the new pin. Not this time it seems. I then attempted to use my card at the local supermarket only to have the pin locked! Aaaaaggh! After struggling on the phone with the Indian call centre I was put through to someone who offered some hope. "Normally one would activate a card with a new pin at an Abbey ATM, but as you live on an island and no Abbey ATM available you may find another bank will offer you pin services connecting to the Abbey network". Hmm! Worth a try. I really don't want a new card and pin.

I went into town and looked at the Lloyd's ATM, not much information there. I then walked around the corner to the Barclay's ATM. On this machine was a notice "The following bank customers are welcome at this ATM". Abbey National was listed. This looked promising. I put my card in and entered my pin. It was accepted and one of the options available as "Pin Services". Very promising. I was able to "Unlock PIN" and withdraw some cash. Cause for celebration!

I really must transfer my account to an island based bank; Barclays is looking very promising.

This is not possible without some sort of scripting. I have been toying with learning Javascript for some time. Javascript, for those that don't know is a client side script, and can be switched off by the user browsing the website. This renders some functionality of a website inoperable!

To overcome this, what is needed is some form of server-side scripting. Server-side scripting are instructions that are run by the server that hosts the website before the web pages are presented to the user's browser. Therefore the user is unable to switch these instructions off. The web page behaves as it is intended by the author.

The two most common server-side scripting languages are PHP and ASP. I have chosen PHP because it is free! It is also very powerful and well supported. You can identify web pages that use PHP by looking at the URL in the browser address bar. It will show something like http://www.somewebsite.com/index.php.

Now I am learning PHP. So far I have found it quite simple to use. I have installed a local server on my PC http://www.wampserver.com/ to learn and run PHP scripts. I am using an online tutorial http://www.code2design.com/lesson_1_welcome_to_php .

Spam Comments

I have noticed regular automated spam comments appearing in my blogs. So now I have switched on both 'Comment Moderation' and 'Word Verification'. This will block out any of these automated spam comments. It will still allow individuals to post comments, but these comments will not be published until I have 'Moderated' them. I may at a later date switch off 'Comment Moderation' but for now it stays.

Stomach Bug

I have been feeling unwell these last few days since Saturday, very restless, bloatedness, stomach pains and diarrhoea. I went into work today and a colleage said that this bug has been going round the island recently. So I guess it's not something I've eaten. I am feeling a little better today, so the worse is past.

Glaucoma

Another visit to the eye clinic revealed that my eye pressure is still high in both eyes at 24. The consultant wants that to come down to 20. 24 would be ok in normal eyes but as I have already received damaged to my optical nerves he wants to get the pressure down to 20. So now I have had my prescibed eye drops changed to Xalacom from my previous drops of Xalatan.

And it's goodbye to the Tooth

Well that tooth won't be bothering me anymore. My appointment with my local NHS Dentist came and went, along with my tooth. It was definately showing its age and I'm surprised it lasted this long.

It's goodbye to the Co-Op

After much family discussion Jeep handed in her notice and the Co-Op and she finished today.

There was a short while when she might have stayed but the conditions where not favourable.

Jeep will now stay at home for a while and concentrate on getting her driving license and taking on further studies at the Isle of Man college.

Star of India

I often walked past the plinth on the West Quay of Ramsey harbour commemorating the building of the 'Star of India' formerly 'Euterpe', built and launched in Ramsey in 1863. She now resides in San Diego, California, USA as part of the San Diego Maritime Museum. The 'Star of India' was built not only as an expetimental iron hulled ship, she is also now the "...oldest active ship of any kind in the world..." and sails at least once a year. For more on the 'Star of India' visit the San Diego Maritime Museum . There is a great online documentary as well as additional information and photos.

Internet Identity Theft

Bummer! I have been the victim of an Internet Identify Theft. I just got paid and decided I needed new ink cartridges for my printer, so lunch-time I went to my local computer shop to buy some cartridges only to have my card declined! I went to the ATM and though it was showing a healthy balance neither the ATM or the shop would let me use my card.

I telephoned my bank (via the usual call centre in India - that was no fun!) and they told me the card had been blocked and referred to their fraud department. I then spoke to a member of the bank's fraud department and he confirmed my card had been used in several attempts to make purchases online ranging from £1,000 downwards. Fortunately, for me, being just before payday my account was looking a bit anaemic and all the transactions were refused. It was at this point fraud was suspected and the card was blocked. Had the fraudster(s) waited until the end of the month and I could have lost this month's salary!

Now all I have to do is wait for a new card (about a week) and the inconvenience that entails. C'est la vie! A lesson learnt. I have a pre-pay debit card and I will use that in future for my online purchases and keep my bank card well away from the Internet! Phew! That was close.

Summer Ails

Mum, Eve & Jeep all have colds. Mine only lasted a day (Tickly throat). Instead I developed a raging tooth ache. It seems to be a an old problem with one of my teeth and I think it's days are numbered. I have managed to get an appointment with my local NHS dentist in three weeks time. For now I have an infection to contend with. It has been very uncomfortable this weekend and if the pain and swelling hasn't subsided tomorrow I will visit my doctor for some anti-biotics to fight the infection.

It's been that long?

Time flys. We're near the end of June. I thought we were at the start of a long hot summer but the weather quickly turned. Last week I thought we were back to winter! I even had the central heating on again! Now it is just muggy.

Work has settled down and we're as busy as ever. Jeep is still working hard at the Co-Op. We have just received a mountain of forms, notes and todos from PJ's school ready for him starting his foundation year in September. It will be strange not taking him to school every lunchtime. a change of routine in taking him to school before work. William has started nursery two afternoons a week. He seems to enjoy himself though he is in tears every time I take him.

My Mum and Eve will be visiting us in just 4 weeks time now for a 4 week visit. We are all looking forward to that.

Having bought the aerolite boat plans I have still to make a start. Though I have been collecting mini-clamps, I now have about 20. It has been recommended that I have about 50. I have sourced these clamps on the island at only £1.50 for a set of 4. So not very costly at all. Every time I visit Douglas I clear the shop out!

I have slipped on the apple diet and resorted back to my presciption. It is so much easier in combating my acid problem.

And then they are off to China

Last night we had the pleasure of the company of a wonderful young couple and their new baby daughter - Matthew, Jenna and Tabitha.

They are members of the local Elim Church in Ramsey. In three weeks time they leave the Isle of Man for an adventure and complete change of life when they migrate long-term to China. After a few months in Canada visiting family, they will continue their journey to China.

They will be studying the language and culture for a couple of years and from there on they will be working closely with the Chinese Church in the local community.

Jeep and I wish them luck and a safe journey. If you would like to keep up with their experiences and learn more about what they are doing they you are welcome to visit their blog at http://thedolmans.blogspot.com/

G.E.R.D

Following on from a previous post in my other blog a couple of years ago, I have for a long time now suffered with GERD and the effects, i.e. heartburn.

My doctor has prescribed a proton-pump inhibitor - Lansoprazole. This has had an immediate effect. If I stop taking these tablets for a couple of days though, the heartburn returns.

I have for a long time been looking for an alternative solution to this age old problem without the need for prescribed drugs. I am concerned about any long-term effects of these acid blockers.

I found on the Internet a possible solution. It involves eating a specific variety of apple and a specific type of honey. I am sceptical too, but I'll try just about anything in search of a cure.

I stopped taking the Lansoprazole on Saturday 7th April 2007. So far it appears to be working. whenever I get a hint of heartburn I eat a slice of this apple and the heartburn dissipates. I haven't tried the honey as yet. The honey is meant to sooth and protect the esophagus giving it a chance to heal and become better resistent to the acid.

I will keep you posted on my progress and if I have to return to my Lansoprazole.

Geodesic Airolite Boats

How about a boat that only weighs a mere 8lbs (3.5 Kg)?

I found recently Geodesic Airolite Boats - http://www.gaboats.com/ . What a revelation! I have ordered two sets of plans. One for the Sweatpea (The 8lb boat!). This I have to see. And one for the Westport Dinghy 8.

I'll keep you posted when I receive them and my progress in building them.

Boats

I miss my Wharram. I used to own a Hinemoa designed by James Wharram - http://www.wharram.com/hinemoa.html. I think I would like to get another one. At some time in the future I want to build a Wharram Tiki 30, but that will have to wait.

Resolution for this year

We are saving hard this year for our planned trip later in the year (maybe early next year) to visit Thailand. Jeep has been away from home for almost three years now and this is also her first absence from Thailand. We are planning to take my Mum and Aunt, so there will be 6 of us in this trip. I am sure when we finally arrive back in Ban Phue, in Udon Thani province there will be a big family reunion. It will not just be Jeep's long absence but my Mum and Aunt's first visit to Thailand as well as their first meeting with Jeep's family.

No Snow

Well, the snow of the last few days passed us by. PJ was a little disappointed - "No snowman this year". I guess we have the "advantage" of a small island being surrounded by all that water keeping the extremities of our variable weather at bay.

First Winter Snow

We had our first snowfall today. It was very light and only lasted a couple of hours. PJ was disappointed that the snow did not lay. No snowmen so far this winter.

Thai Culture

It's nearing Christmas and we are nearly ready. PJ is a little older now to understand more about Christmas. I am not religious and Jeep is very much Buddhist. It is difficult to teach the way of Buddha to PJ, with him attending a largely Christian school and Christian community.

There are no Buddhist temples on the island, and Jeep is concerned about keeping her Thai culture alive. To that end we are looking to build a Thai community here on the island commited to keeping their Thai culture and beliefs alive. We are at the planning stage but hope to make great strides in the New Year.

"Slug in my mouth"

We're all just getting over a summer cold. It hasn't been too bad, sore thoat followed by a phlegmy chesty cough. PJ described his chesty cough as having a "Slug in my mouth". Hmmm! That pretty much sums it up!

William's first steps

News has been slow coming. Jeep and I are both working hard. I take over the child care in the evenings when Jeep goes out to work. Consequently, we both feel tired very often. Sitting myself down and updating my blog can be a challenge. William managed to walk a few steps for my birthday, in early July. He also speaks a few discernible words and improves everyday. He is always a joy. A very happy baby. I say baby, he is fast becoming a toddler! PJ is growing fast and I often have a fight on my hands as to which of us gets onto the computer first! His speech is improving and he seems to be coping well with both English and Thai. Jeep tells me he speaks Thai like a non-Thai.

William's First Birthday

William celebrated his first birthday on Friday. He is still not walking and only his two bottom teeth are showing. I guess he is taking his time and in no hurry, unlike PJ.

Sunday, April 02, 2006

Chickenpox

PJ has got Chickenpox and he is not too happy about it. His playmates have been banned from calling round. I first noticed the spots on Saturday, so he probably has already infected the other children at the nursery. I will find out on Monday. William is showing no sings of infection but in all probability he will get it soon.

Snowy Ramsey

The last few days has seen frequent snow showers over Ramsey. Sometimes there was a significant amount for it to lay, but this amounted to no more than 1cm. Our first snow this winter, well I say winter but it is now spring! I doubt whether we will see any more snow until next winter, maybe not even then.

Coughs and Sneezes

I've finally got to the bottom of why I have been continually catching chesty coughs, colds, flu and chest infections - Asthma!

The winter of 2004/5 saw me with a very bad viral infection which took many weeks to clear. After this I was noticeably asthmatic. I was prescribed a preventer and a reliever, though I had little understanding of asthma or of the use of these inhalers in controlling it. During the rest of the year I felt ok. I had an irritating cough but then I have had this for years. I put it down to my heavy smoking in my youth.

Thinking back over those years now, I believe that it was not the smoking that gave me this cough but asthma. It would seem that I have been suffering from asthma for decades! Now with proper use of both the preventer and reliever inhalers my cough is finally under control. Hopefully, I can look forward to future years with fewer colds and sneezes.

William is now crawling

Today William finally got the hang of crawling. I sat him down and turned my back and when I turned back he had moved several feet. So I thought I'd test him. I sat him down again. I moved to the other side of the room and called to him. He again crawled the few feet towards me. I think he will improve rapidly now. He can also climb up to a kneeling position. Soon he will be climbling to a standing position. In a few months I am sure he will be taking his first steps unaided.

Jeep and the Co-Op

Jeep has finally got the job that she wanted. Jeep was invited to an inteview at a Co-Op mini-market a couple of weeks ago and was very excited to have been offered the job of Sales Assistant. It is working part-time about 30 hours per week. The hours compliment mine, so that when I am working Jeep is at home and when I come home Jeep is working. Jeep works 3 evenings per week and on Saturday and Sunday. It works well for us and saves us a lot of money with child care costs.

Two weeks into her new job, Jeep is enjoying the experience very much. It gets her out of the home. It gives her a break from the boys. She meets new people daily. Is able to practice her English in a real environment. She also gets on well with her colleagues. Just like my job, it is only a few minutes walk from home. So we can reveal that Jeep is extreamly happy with her new job at the Co-Op.

More Winter Whoes

I don't believe it! More time off work.

Last week I was struck down with a cold. Not too serious, I could cope with that. Four days into my could and I was hit with a fever, which lasted all of last Sunday afternoon. By evening my chest was sore and I had an earache. I didn't sleep much that night and by morning the pain in my ear was unbearable. I contacted the surgury, and was diagnosed with an ear infection and a chest infection. More antibiotics for me!

My ear has cleared up now but I still have a chesty cough. This should clear up by next week. William has cought the viral infection that has been going round the island. PJ had this too, but his cleared up a week ago, so I am expecting William's infection too follow the same path. Hopefully, we will all be well again after the weekend. Roll on the spring!

Viral Infection

I hope that this is the end of my ails for some time! I have just got over a horrible bowel viral infection. It kept me off work for a few days. Nasty piece of work! I think I caught this one from William but apart from the high temperature, he didn't seem too effected. PJ doesn't seem to be effected by much. He gets down for a few hours and then bounces back with gusto! Apart from the odd cold, Jeep has avoided ill health this winter.

My blood test for my indigestion and acid reflux has proved negative and since taking the acid pump tablets I haven't been effected by excess acid since. I am hopeful for the future.

I am now looking forward to spring and a healthier outlook for the rest of the year.

Indigestion and Acid Reflux

If anyone out there knows of a solution to this horrible problem then
please drop me a line. This has plagued me for too long.

Chest Infection

Almost a year to the day, and I have a chest infection again! These cold and damp winters are not good for my health. I am surprised I did not write about it last year, but then I was very bad. At the moment my chest is not too bad. Maybe it is the flu jab that I had this year that is reducing it's effect, maybe not. Someday I will be able to live and work in a dryer, warmer climate.

William's first tooth

One of William's lower front teeth has made an appearance. Very sharp it is too. He will be feeding from the bottle very soon I think!

Sitting Up

William was 7 months old yesterday and he sits up by himself now. He is a a happy little baby. He spends many hours chattering away. Baa baa baa baa baa baa... Cute eh? Oh! And blowing rasberrys!

What's New

I have added a link on my family website for Jeep's recipes. So far we have only published one: Spicey Thai Salmon - delicious. Click on the Evans-Amsri home page link on the right to visit our home.

I have also uploaded many recent photos of William and PJ, all taken during November. Click on the Flickr banner on our home page or the menu link 'Photo albums' also from our home page.

This month sees a 15 day festival that takes place every year from the 1st Decmber in Udon Thani called 'Tung Sri Mueng'. The festival's purpose is to promote local produce and enterprise, as well as to have fun! It is a very colourful and noisy affair. Here is a link http://web.udru.ac.th/event/gallery/tung_sri_mueng/ displaying a slide show of many photos of this festival.

Loi Krathong 2005

Loi Krathong is an annual festival in Thailand.

On the night of the 16th of November, Thai's all around the country make elaborate floats, usually made from banana leaves, decorated with flowers, candles and sparklers. The candles and sparklers are lit and then the whole decoration is floated down river. Some Thais will even attach some of their hair or finger nail, so as to float aware their troubles.

To see some photos of this years Loi Krathong festival please visit http://travel.sanook.com/bangkok/bangkok_08545.php?? Though this site is in Thai, the pictures more than make up for it.

First Frosts of Winter

We had our first frost of this winter last night, and again tonight. Perhaps a sign of the winter ahead?

Friday, November 04, 2005

Flu Jab

I received my first ever Flu jab yesterday, free, courtesy of the NHS. Last year I had a bad case of Flu, and subsequently a severe chest infection. This left me asthmatic, hence my entitlement to a free NHS Flu inoculation. Hopefully, I won't suffer to the extent that I did last winter.

Version 2 of our Website is launched today

Well, finally I have launched version 2. Not yet complete, but it does give me plenty of options for the future. I have avoided using Javascript, Tables & Frames for markup, relying on HTML/CSS only. I am in the process of learning Javascript. I am looking forward to adding extra functionality using Javascript. There is also much more content to be added too. Our new website can be found at: http://www.amsri.co.uk . Please pay us a visit and sign our Guestbook.

Eric Meyer On CSS

I've discovered Eric Meyer - http://www.meyerweb.com - the man is pure CSS/HTML genius!

I bought his two books - Eric Meyer On CSS and More Eric Meyer On CSS . They are both worth the money if you are interested in designing and writing your own website. Both books are full of practical examples.

Now I must get on with my family website. ;-)

Autumn (Fall) Gales are here

Boy! I'm having fun!

I have almost completed my first month in my new job. William is growing fast and is now 4 months old. Version 2 of my website is coming along. I have found some interesting links, more on this later. Finally, in this last week, I have stepped into the Internet Marketing arena again. I was looking for a site to host my website and I found this - http://www.website.ws/evansamsri/ . Website hosting AND a money earner. All for US$10 per month. Another site, more for our Thai readers really. Not sure how well it works but it should get better with time - http://suparsit.com/index1.php . For all you Thais out there, try it. It's free! Please let me know how you get on with it.

34' Sailing Dory 'Badger'

While walking towards the swing-bridge in Ramsey harbour, there ahead of me and to my great surprise was 'Badger' waiting to enter the inner harbour. 'Badger' is a Benford designed 34' sailing dory, made famous (in sailing circles) by Annie Hill in her excellent book 'Voyaging On A Small Income'.

The new owners of Badger - Alan and Gloria Parsons - were sailing her to a Junk Rig Association meeting in Scotland. On route from their home in Cumbria they decided to have a short stop-over in the Isle of Man. I am pleased they did. Having already read both Annie's books, I was keen to see this wonderful boat first hand. Here she was sailing into my home town!

I quickly made may aquaintance to Alan and Gloria. They stayed for a few days in Ramsey before continuing their voyage, and I was fortunate enough not only to make new friends but to go aboard 'Badger' and admire her fully. What a week!

Paul's 50th Birthday Party

My 50th birthday came and went. I celebrated my half-century with a party at home. With memories of the 70s in mind, I chose a Hawaiian theme. Why? Well for those who are not old enough to remember there was an American police drama on TV based on a police department in Hawaii. It's title was "Hawaii Five-O".

The traditional English BBQ did not go down well with people as much as Jeep's Thai food. Which was a hit! So, we have decided to hold a Thai buffet party for future events, and leave the English BBQ to others to organise.

The Manx summer is fast drawing to a close and the mountain heather is starting to bloom. Those hills are turning purple. Autumn (fall) is on its way!

More Baby Pictures

I have posted some more baby pictures of William today and a few of PJ. All of them can be found on the 'New Baby Photos' page.

Sunday, May 15, 2005

Welcome Home!

Jeep and baby Liam came home yesterday.

It's great hearing the cry of a new born babe. They don't do a lot though - poo, eat and sleep in rapid rotation. He's keeping Jeep busy. PJ gets extra cuddles from me, so he's happy too.

Saturday, May 14, 2005

Homecoming

Jeep phoned me this morning; she tells me the hospital will allow her and William to come home today - Saturday.

A couple more photos of Liam added to 'New Baby Photos'.

It's A Boy!

William (Liam) was born at 21:59 Thursday 12th of May, at Noble's Hospital, Isle of Man. He weighed in at 7.4lbs (3.29kg). Both Jeep and Liam are doing well.

Baby News

Still no sign of the baby making an appearance, much to Jeep's dismay.

We will see the consultant again at Nobles hospital this afternoon.

Thursday, May 05, 2005

Nearly There

We made another visit to the hospital on Wednesday morning. Jeep now has a CTG of the baby three times a week. The Consultant believes the baby will arrive by the weekend. Jeep feels that the baby's arrival is near too. So we could have a busy weekend in store.

April Photos

New photos added for April 2005. Many of PJ and several of our Songkran party.

38th Week

Last week we visited the Consultant at Nobles Hospital here on the Island. Jeep had another scan. She is now in her 38th week.

Because of Jeep's gestation diabetes we now have to visit the hospital twice weekly. Jeep's diabetes isn't serious and is being controlled by her diet.

We are now on the final countdown, and the baby could arrive anytime. It is a very uncomfortable time for Jeep. The 'Bump' is heavy and Jeep suffers from some water retention around her joints, as well as some hip and back pain. So Jeep, more than anyone, is looking forward (with some trepidation) to the big day.

Friday, April 22, 2005

Move Completed

Our move is complete and we are settling in to our new home. PJ loves the garden.

Jeep now has regular check-ups at the hospital as her time draws near. She has developed gestation diabetes, which requires close monitoring. Because of this it is unlikely that the hospital will allow Jeep to go beyond her 40th week. So it looks like the baby should arrive on time, if not before.

Congratulations to Tim and Marion on the birth of there son Oliver. Though Oliver has had some complications, he now appears to be doing well. We wish him well and that he will be home with his family soon.

Changes Afoot

Jeeps pregnancy progresses well. We are down to the last few weeks now and the excitement and expectations mount.

We will be moving soon. Still in Ramsey but into a larger property. Nicely located in the center of town. We will have a garden at last for PJ to play in safely.

Still no progress in version 2 of this site. I'm sure I will make the time soon.

50th Birthday Preview

I did not intend to leave such a big gap in my blog. I have been quite unwell since before the New Year with a chest infection. It is almost clear now, but it did slow me up a little.

I have made no progress in Version two of this site. It has taken a bit of a back seat for some time. I hope to start work on this again soon. It will not use frames and be more flexible, along with improved photo albums.

Jeep's pregnancy is moving along well and just entering her final trimester. The sex of the baby is unknown and this will be an exciting surprise to us when it arrives.

My Mum and Aunt Eve are coming over from Spain to be with us when the baby is due. This will be a welcome relief for us both, as PJ can be a handful at times.

Plans are underway for my 50th birthday celebrations in July of this year. Invites have gone out and replies have started to come in. It is planned to be an afternoon fun event, with the children in mind. Hopefully, there will be something for everyone. It should be a great summer social. I am looking forward to sharing this event will all my friends. If I have left anyone out who wants to attend then please drop me a line.

Evans Genealogy

I have added another page to my Genealogy link.

I need some help to confirm a possible link I have found between my Abraham Evans married in Skilgate in 1783, with an Abraham Evans baptised 30 miles away in Churchstanton on 25 Feb 1753 which would make my Abraham about 30 years old when he married.

Is this him?

Second Scan

Today we went to Nobles Hospital for Jeeps's second scan. The baby is now 20 weeks and 5 days old. The scan was much clearer and the baby was certainly more active during the scan, and everything is progressing well for the baby.

The sex of the child is still unknown, as it is hospital policy not to speculate based on scans. The only way we can find this out is to travel off the island. As this is unlikely, the sex will not be known until birth. So that will be a nice surprise for us.

The photo of the scan can be seen in the New Baby Album. I have also added a link on the menu to New Baby Photos for quick access.
